Roll-On SPF Is Now A Thing (And It’s Natural)

I have a confession to make; I hate wearing sunscreen.

In the last few years, I’ve made a real effort to cleanse my beauty routine of toxins, harsh chemicals and artificial fragrance, and for the most part, it was really easy.

There are so many amazing brands available that have beautiful clean skincare and don’t compromise on delivering real results. But the one product that alluded me was sunscreen.

There is no shortage of great chemical sunscreens on the market.  You know the kind – they smooth instantly onto your skin, feel like silk, and are essentially undetectable to the eye.  But when it comes to natural sunscreen, it was almost impossible!

Every product I tried came with a whole raft of issues; they left a white cast, they had an incredibly strong smell, they don’t blend well, makeup doesn’t nicely on top of them, they’re greasy, the list goes on…

So I was totally delighted when I heard that Hunter Lab has produced an SPF50+ sunscreen designed specifically to avoid all those problems.  The brand has taken their love of skincare, and their passion for using clean ingredients and made a beautiful natural sunscreen.

Hold up, what does natural sunscreen even mean?

Natural sunscreens are physical sunscreens. Meaning they provide a physical barrier on the surface of the skin that works to repel harmful UVB and UVA rays.  Active minerals, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, act as a barrier between your skin and the sun. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, absorb UV rays into the skin, then convert those rays into non-damaging heat for the body to metabolise.

What’s great about a natural, physical sunscreen is that the active ingredients they use are often less irritating on the skin, particularly for sensitive skin types. For example, a physical sunscreen is more suited to skin types with inflammatory skin conditions like rosacea compared to a chemical sunscreen which absorbs more heat into the skin.

OK, I get it, it’s non-toxic, but is it actually nice to wear…?

I am happy to report that it feels very comfortable on the skin.  The formula has a slight tint to counter any cast left from the zinc, which it actually gives a nice luminescence to the skin.  I also find the formula to be quite hydrating, without being greasy, and it’s a lovely base for makeup.

My hot tip is to gently warm the surface of the stick on the back of your hand prior to application. This will ensure sufficient product is applied to the skin, and in the cold weather, it will make the application much easier.

And this is a roll on?!

Well, it’s a solid stick formulation.  Which means is super portable with no risk of melting, leaking, or the bottle breaking and leaking through your bag.  I carry mine in my bag because I always get caught out in the sun when I’m least expecting it; impromptu afternoon drinks at a beer garden anyone…? Portability also makes it easy to reapply to the back of your hands. Continual hand washing mixed with maximum sun exposure means your hands are usually the first place to show signs of ageing from sun damage. That’s my pro tip!
